âHey.â Alisha smiles at me as I enter the house. I drove straight here, only stopping off once to catch some sleep for a few hours by napping on a rest stop picnic table. She refused to tell me what was so damn important that it required me seeing her face to face for her to share.
âIâve missed you, honey.â She comes in for a kiss that I donât return.
Iâm only here to tell her that I want out. She can have the house. Keep the lifestyle sheâs accustomed to. All she has to do is sign the papers.
She brushes my rejection off. âLetti, baby. Come show your dad our surprise.â
I take a seat on the couch, expecting her to have a new haircut or something. Kid is always begging her mom to let her get hot pink streaks in her hair.
Letti comes skipping through the living room, cheesing big time, otherwise appearing the same.
âWell?â Alisha prompts.
âIâm waiting.â I glance between them, not following what the big deal is.
âRead her shirt, Xavier.â
Letti holds the front of her shirt out, stretching the iron on letters that read, âBig Sister.â
âBig sister? I donât get it.â
âSeriously.â Alisha pouts and stomps her foot like a child. âIâm pregnant. Weâre having another baby.â
Fuck me. âLetti, go to your room.â
âBut Dad?â
âNow, kid. I need to talk to your mom alone,â I snap harsher than I mean to.
Her bottom lip wobbles. âOkay.â She walks to her room, slowly, hanging her head.
Iâm a dick. Shit. Iâll make it up to her. Seems like thatâs all I ever do is try to bribe my way out of another disappointment Iâm the source of.
âYou seem upset.â Alisha drops onto my lap. âI thought youâd be happy.â
âSurprised.â
âLetti is so excited to be a big sister. I think itâll be a boy.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âJust a feeling.â
âThis kid even mine?â
âAre you seriously asking me that?â She slides off my lap, burying her face in her hands, bringing on the crocodile tears. âThereâs been no one since the last time you were home.â
âThought you were on birth control.â
âI went off it about a month before you came home.â
âDonât you think thatâs something we should have discussed? Fucking hell, Lisha.â
âYouâve always wanted a son.â
âYeah, when I thought we were making a go at things. We arenât in the right place to be bringing another kid into our lives.â
âWe can be. If youâd try. All I want⦠all our daughter wants is for us to be an actual family. We promised we were going to give Letti what we never had.â
Guilt eats at me because thisâright here with my family is where I should want to be. Only it isnât. I left part of my heart in West Virginia. The other half is currently crying into her pillow, wondering why her dad is such an asshole.
âYouâre right. I should be here more often. Be a father. Be a husband,â I growl out. Iâm pissed at myself. Angry with Alisha. Mad as hell at Rosie. Fuck me.
