“Hey.” Alisha smiles at me as I enter the house. I drove straight here, only stopping off once to catch some sleep for a few hours by napping on a rest stop picnic table. She refused to tell me what was so damn important that it required me seeing her face to face for her to share.

“I’ve missed you, honey.” She comes in for a kiss that I don’t return.

I’m only here to tell her that I want out. She can have the house. Keep the lifestyle she’s accustomed to. All she has to do is sign the papers.

She brushes my rejection off. “Letti, baby. Come show your dad our surprise.”

I take a seat on the couch, expecting her to have a new haircut or something. Kid is always begging her mom to let her get hot pink streaks in her hair.

Letti comes skipping through the living room, cheesing big time, otherwise appearing the same.

“Well?” Alisha prompts.

“I’m waiting.” I glance between them, not following what the big deal is.

“Read her shirt, Xavier.”

Letti holds the front of her shirt out, stretching the iron on letters that read, ‘Big Sister.’

“Big sister? I don’t get it.”

“Seriously.” Alisha pouts and stomps her foot like a child. “I’m pregnant. We’re having another baby.”

Fuck me. “Letti, go to your room.”

“But Dad?”

“Now, kid. I need to talk to your mom alone,” I snap harsher than I mean to.

Her bottom lip wobbles. “Okay.” She walks to her room, slowly, hanging her head.

I’m a dick. Shit. I’ll make it up to her. Seems like that’s all I ever do is try to bribe my way out of another disappointment I’m the source of.

“You seem upset.” Alisha drops onto my lap. “I thought you’d be happy.”

“Surprised.”

“Letti is so excited to be a big sister. I think it’ll be a boy.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Just a feeling.”

“This kid even mine?”

“Are you seriously asking me that?” She slides off my lap, burying her face in her hands, bringing on the crocodile tears. “There’s been no one since the last time you were home.”

“Thought you were on birth control.”

“I went off it about a month before you came home.”

“Don’t you think that’s something we should have discussed? Fucking hell, Lisha.”

“You’ve always wanted a son.”

“Yeah, when I thought we were making a go at things. We aren’t in the right place to be bringing another kid into our lives.”

“We can be. If you’d try. All I want… all our daughter wants is for us to be an actual family. We promised we were going to give Letti what we never had.”

Guilt eats at me because this—right here with my family is where I should want to be. Only it isn’t. I left part of my heart in West Virginia. The other half is currently crying into her pillow, wondering why her dad is such an asshole.

“You’re right. I should be here more often. Be a father. Be a husband,” I growl out. I’m pissed at myself. Angry with Alisha. Mad as hell at Rosie. Fuck me.
